President Elect Barack Obama is set to become the 44th leader of the free world, but the number is already entrenched in African American history.
A trio of prominent Syracuse University running backs: Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little all wore the number 44 and they all earned All-American honors.
Obama broke a major color barrier by becoming the first African American President. Ernie Davis broke a major color barrier of his own by becoming the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. Barack Obama was born in 1961. Coincidence? Yes. But it's an interesting coincidence.
Congrats to President Obama.
